If you want to save money skip the pricey souvenirs at the temple itself. Instead head to the nearby markets. You can find cooler stuff for way cheaper; I got some beautiful handmade items!

I recommend exploring the surrounding area a bit. There's a lovely park close by that’s perfect for a little break. Grab a snack from the small vendors there, I've tried some awesome street food!

I suggest making use of the free guided tours; they're super informative. I learned so much about Mazu and the temple's history, plus it helped me appreciate the architecture even more.
