consider using the entrance through the retiro park side; the main entrance can be a bit confusing and crowded. it saved me some time when i didn’t have to deal with the rush.
Make sure to check out the park around the Palacio, it's beautiful and perfect for a stroll after visiting the museum. I spent some extra time there and it really enhanced my experience.
Look for any special exhibitions before you go. I stumbled upon one that wasn’t widely advertised, and it turned out to be the highlight of my visit.
