I think it's worth spending a few extra bucks on the audio guide. It really brings the history to life and helps you understand what you're looking at. The pamphlet just doesn't do it justice.
I suggest checking out one of the performances they host. The vibe of the theater lit up at night is unforgettable and adds a whole new layer to the experience.
My tip is to wear comfortable shoes. You'll do a fair bit of walking to get to the theater from the main square and the cobbled streets can be a bit unforgiving.
