I think the best time to visit is on a weekday. It tends to be less crowded, and you can really soak in the architecture without dodging lots of people.

I suggest taking a stroll from the nearby Jardin des Plantes before you get to the Porte de Peyrou. It adds an extra layer of beauty to your visit. Plus, it's free!
