I suggest getting there right when they open at 8 AM. It wasn't crowded at all and I could absorb the area in peace. Plus, I had more time to take photos without a bunch of people around.
If you're on a budget, skip the audio guide. I found the info on the signs pretty comprehensive, and that saved me a few bucks. It’s also nice to move at your own pace.
My advice is to wear comfortable shoes. You'll be walking around a lot, and some of the buildings have uneven floors. I had to tiptoe through some areas and regretted wearing sandals.
