The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Te-Papa-Tongarev National Museum

Check out the free app they have on-site. It offers cool audio guides and tips that make the exhibits come alive without feeling like you're just reading the placards.
Get there right when they open at 10 AM. The museum fills up quickly, and you’ll have a much better experience exploring the galleries without the crowds

Don't miss the immersive 3D movie about New Zealand's landscapes on the top floor. It's just a few bucks and totally worth it!
Hobbiton

Pack some snacks! The café prices are pretty steep, and it’s nice to have something to munch on while you wander. I regretted not bringing anything!

Definitely take the guided tour; they share awesome behind-the-scenes stories about the filming. I thought I knew everything, but I learned so much more!

Plan to spend at least 3-4 hours there, especially if you want to enjoy a leisurely lunch or explore every nook and cranny. I rushed and missed out on a lot of the charm.

I recommend booking your tickets online in advance. It’ll save you time at the entrance, and sometimes you can snag some discounts too. I saved a few bucks this way!
Auckland Military History Museum

Make sure to allow extra time for the gift shop! They have some unique military-themed souvenirs that are actually really well priced.
Auckland Art Gallery
Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu

I suggest you check their schedule for temporary exhibitions before you go; I was blown away by one and totally missed it because I didn't look ahead!

If you're planning to grab a bite, the cafe there is great, but it can get busy around lunchtime—try going at 2 PM to avoid the crowds.

Don't forget to take a stroll around the surrounding gardens after your visit; it's a lovely way to wind down and the perfect photo op!
Whale Watch Kaikoura
The Church of the Good Shepherd
The Oaks Gallery

I highly recommend visiting on a weekday if you can. It’s way less crowded, and you can really take your time to appreciate the art without feeling rushed. I went on a Saturday and it was pretty packed!
