Grand Canyon National Park
My advice is to download a trail map off the park website before you go. The signs are helpful, but they don't always show you all the trails, and a map can help you discover hidden gems.
I suggest bringing your own snacks and water. The food at the park is a bit pricey, and packing a picnic can save a bunch and let you enjoy the views longer
If you're thinking about a guided tour check for discounts online ahead of time. I found one that was 20% off just by searching!
Grand Canyon Visitor Center
Pack your own snacks. The food options are limited and pricey. I brought granola bars and saved cash for a nice dinner later.
Bring a reusable water bottle. There are refill stations everywhere, and it’s a great way to stay hydrated and save money on bottled water
South Mountain Park
If you want some stunning views without a strenuous hike, head to Dobbins Lookout. I swear, the sunset views there are worth every step! Go around 5:30 pm for the best colors.
I suggest bringing plenty of water. It gets hot out there, and you don't want to ruin your day by getting dehydrated. I almost had to cut my hike short because I ran low. Trust me, it's not fun.
I recommend downloading a trail map before you go. Cell service is spotty in the park. I was lost for a bit trying to find my way back to the car. A printed or offline map could save you time!
I think you should bring a camera, but also a good pair of shoes - you'll definitely want to capture the landscapes while being comfortable! I wore sandals and ended up with sore feet after a long day!
Meteor Crater
If you're into hiking, I suggest taking the short trails around the crater. They provide different views and are less crowded than the main lookout.
Don’t skip the visitor center; it’s full of cool exhibits. I was surprised at how much I learned there, and it’s included in the entrance fee!
i recommend getting there by 9 am to beat the crowds and enjoy a quieter experience. plus, the morning light really makes the crater pop in photos.
Check the weather before you go. I got caught in the sun without sunscreen, and it was pretty brutal on the exposed walkways.
The Phoenix Mountains Preserve
My advice is to wear sturdy shoes. Some trails can be rocky and tough on sandals, especially if you plan on going off the beaten path.
I think it's worth downloading a map or trail app before you go. Cell service gets spotty in the preserve, and getting lost is no fun!
Phoenix Botanical Garden
Don't skip the Butterfly Exhibit if it's open! It's such a magical experience. I thought I could just see it later but it ended up being the highlight of my day!
If you're planning to visit during the hotter months, aim to get there right when it opens at 7 AM. You'll enjoy the cooler temps and fewer crowds, plus you can take some stunning morning photos!
My advice is to wear comfortable shoes. The gardens are larger than they look, and you'll want to explore every inch without your feet giving out on you
Antelope Canyon
Bring a good camera or just your phone with a solid camera – the light and colors are unreal, but they can be tough to capture if you're not ready.
I really recommend going for the slot canyons at around 11 AM for the best light play. The tour guides know the time, but it’s good to be aware when booking.
I suggest booking your tour at least a week in advance – it gets super crowded, and I ended up on a waiting list that I thought I was gonna die on!
Papago Park
Check out the Hole in the Rock; it's really cool and gives you great views of the city. Just be careful on the way up - it's steeper than it looks!
My advice is to wear comfy shoes! I made the mistake of wearing cute sandals, and my feet were killing me by the end of the day.
Phoenix Zoo
Plan your visit on a weekday if possible; weekends can get super crowded! Trust me it makes a huge difference in how relaxed your experience will be.
Bring a refillable water bottle! There are water stations throughout the zoo, and you'll want to stay hydrated while walking around.
Agua Caliente
Plan to spend at least half a day here. I rushed through because I didn't allocate enough time, and I missed some beautiful spots that I wanted to explore.
Check the local weather before you go. I went on a windy day, which made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been.
