I think starting your day around 8 AM is perfect. The trails are less busy, and you get to enjoy the serene beauty of the forest before the crowds show up.

I recommend downloading offline maps before heading out. Cell service is pretty spotty in some areas, and you don't want to get lost!

If you're on a budget, consider packing a picnic. We saved a ton by not eating at the local diners, and there's nothing like a meal with a view!
Umatilla National Forest

My advice is to bring your own snacks and drinks. The nearby stores can get pricey, and trust me, you're gonna work up an appetite hiking those trails!

I suggest downloading a good offline map before you go. Some trails can get a lil confusing, and there's not always great signal out there.

I recommend checking out the less popular trails for a more peaceful experience. I stumbled onto a few that were hidden gems, way less crowded and super beautiful.
Ochoco National Forest

I think bringing your own snacks is a great way to save some money. The little shops aren’t cheap, and you’ll want the energy for hiking anyway!

My advice is to check out the trails around sunrise (like around 6 AM) for fewer crowds and jaw-dropping views. It’s totally worth it!

I recommend downloading a good offline map before you go. Cell service can be spotty, and trust me, getting lost is not fun!
Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge

I suggest bringing binoculars for bird watching—there are so many cool species around! I didn't have mine and missed a lot.

Check out the visitor center first—it's got some great info and maps that helped me avoid getting lost on the trails. I didn’t do this at first and wasted time figuring out where to go.

Try to visit around 9 AM if you can. The light is gorgeous then, and the crowds are way smaller.

My advice is to wear good shoes! Some trails can get muddy, and I regretted my cute sneakers when I was slipping around.
Malheur National Forest

for the best views, hit the trails around sunrise, around 6:30 am. the light is amazing and you can avoid the crowds. i missed it and regretted it big time!

If you're planning to hike, bring plenty of water and snacks. I ran out too early and had to cut my hike short. Trust me, it gets hot out there!
