My advice is to check out the lovely park nearby before or after your visit. It's a nice spot to relax and it won't cost you a penny, plus there’s got to be some nice views!
I suggest arriving right at 9 AM when it opens so you can avoid the crowds. It makes exploring the castle much more enjoyable and you can get some great photos without people everywhere.
I think you should take the time to climb to the top of the keep for the stunning views of Rochester. It’s a bit of a workout, but totally worth it for the photos. Just watch your step, it can be slippery.
