I think it's worth spending time at the workshops. I loved making my own silver piece, but I wish I had reserved a spot beforehand. They get full quickly.
I suggest bringing cash, as some vendors only accept pesos. It made things a bit tricky for me at first, but once I got some cash, I found better deals!
My advice is to wear comfy shoes. The streets are cobbled and a bit uneven, so you'll be glad you did! I regretted my shoe choice halfway through.
