I suggest you visit in the morning around 9 AM. It’s way less crowded and you get to enjoy the tranquility of the cathedral without hoards of tourists. I wish I'd done that!
I recommend going on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds. I went on Saturday, and it felt like I was in a line instead of enjoying the space.
If you can, grab a city pass! It can save you money if you plan to visit other attractions in Ghent. I didn’t get one, and regretted it a bit.
