If you're taking public transport, grab a bus pass instead of single tickets; it seriously saves you cash on multiple rides! I found the bus network easy to use.

Check out the hot springs, but do it early! They get super crowded by noon, and it's way nicer when the crowds thin out. I wish I had planned better!
