South Mountain Park

If you want some stunning views without a strenuous hike, head to Dobbins Lookout. I swear, the sunset views there are worth every step! Go around 5:30 pm for the best colors.

I suggest bringing plenty of water. It gets hot out there, and you don't want to ruin your day by getting dehydrated. I almost had to cut my hike short because I ran low. Trust me, it's not fun.

I recommend downloading a trail map before you go. Cell service is spotty in the park. I was lost for a bit trying to find my way back to the car. A printed or offline map could save you time!

I think you should bring a camera, but also a good pair of shoes - you'll definitely want to capture the landscapes while being comfortable! I wore sandals and ended up with sore feet after a long day!
The Phoenix Mountains Preserve

I recommend hitting the trails early around 7 AM so you can beat the heat and get some great sunrise shots!

I found out the hard way that hikes might take longer than anticipated. Don’t rush—enjoy the scenery and take breaks, especially if it’s hotter out.

My advice is to wear sturdy shoes. Some trails can be rocky and tough on sandals, especially if you plan on going off the beaten path.

I think it's worth downloading a map or trail app before you go. Cell service gets spotty in the preserve, and getting lost is no fun!
Phoenix Botanical Garden

Check for any special events or workshops happening during your visit. I stumbled upon an art exhibit and it added such a lovely touch to my experience.

Parking can get tricky, so I suggest arriving a little earlier to snag a good spot. I almost ended up parking way further than I wanted and lost some precious exploration time!

Don't skip the Butterfly Exhibit if it's open! It's such a magical experience. I thought I could just see it later but it ended up being the highlight of my day!
If you're planning to visit during the hotter months, aim to get there right when it opens at 7 AM. You'll enjoy the cooler temps and fewer crowds, plus you can take some stunning morning photos!
Papago Park
Bring a water bottle and make sure it's insulated! I learned the hard way that the sun can be brutal, and you don’t wanna run out of water.

If you're planning to hike, I recommend hitting the trails early, like around 7 AM. It gets hot fast and you’ll avoid the busy crowds.

Parking can get tricky on weekends, so try the lot near the Desert Botanical Garden instead - it’s just a short walk and saves you time

I suggest taking your time exploring the park. I rushed through but trust me, it’s totally worth stopping to appreciate the beautiful desert landscapes.
Phoenix Zoo

Check out the schedule for animal feedings and talks. I almost missed a great giraffe feeding that was super fun and educational!

Consider getting a membership if you’re local or think you’ll visit more than twice in a year; it pays for itself quickly and includes perks like free parking!

Plan your visit on a weekday if possible; weekends can get super crowded! Trust me it makes a huge difference in how relaxed your experience will be.

Bring a refillable water bottle! There are water stations throughout the zoo, and you'll want to stay hydrated while walking around.
OdySea Aquarium
My advice is to get the combo ticket that includes the 3D movie. It’s not overly long, and it was a nice break from walking around. Plus, it’s well worth the extra cost!

Look for the daily animal encounters schedule. I missed it, but I heard they are really fun and worth fitting into your visit. Totally enhance your experience.

Try to go on a weekday, I went on a Saturday and it was super crowded. You'll have a much more enjoyable experience if you can take your time looking at everything without the hustle.

I recommend taking lots of photos but also taking a moment to put down your phone and just enjoy the tanks. The colors and the fish are mesmerizing!
Encanto Park
I suggest bringing your own snacks and drinks. The concessions can get pricey, and there's plenty of nice spots to picnic in the shade!

I recommend visiting during the early morning around 8 AM; the weather is cooler and the park is peaceful, perfect for a relaxing stroll and capturing great photos.

If you prefer some quiet time, avoid weekends. I think weekdays are way better—less crowded, and you can enjoy the nature without the noise.
Butterfly Wonderland

I recommend checking out the butterfly emerging area; it’s a real treat to see the little guys hatching. Definitely beats just looking at them

My advice is to bring a camera with a good zoom. The butterflies are super colorful, but they don't always land where you want. I wish I had brought mine because the shots would’ve been epic!
Pisteva Peak Park

Start your hike early like around 7 AM. The heat can be brutal later in the day and the trails are less crowded in the morning. Trust me the views at sunrise are worth it!

Wear sturdy shoes! I made the mistake of wearing casual sneakers and regretted it halfway through the hike. Hiking shoes really make a difference on the rocky trails.

Bring plenty of water and some snacks. I brought a small cooler with drinks that I stashed in my backpack, which made the hike more enjoyable without spending extra at kiosks!

Check out the local events calendar before you go. I stumbled upon a fun outdoor yoga class happening that day, which was a great way to enjoy the scenery and meet some friendly locals!
The Japanese Friendship Garden

My advice is to bring some snacks and drinks. There aren’t many spots nearby to grab a bite without making it a hassle, and the beautiful surroundings are perfect for a little picnic

I recommend checking their calendar for special events or art exhibits before you go. I stumbled upon a lovely tea ceremony that I wasn't expecting!
