Exit Glacier
Bring snacks and water – the hike can be a bit longer than you expect, and having a picnic at the viewpoint was one of my favorite experiences! It saves money too!
Check out the visitor center first for info on the best trails. I almost missed the stunning views on the more challenging routes because I didn't do this!
Mendenhall Glacier
You don't need to book an expensive tour. I found that just hiking the trails was a way better experience and way cheaper!
if you're tight on time, skip the visitor center and head straight to the trails. the views are epic, and you'll save some time for the good stuff!
Davidson Glacier
Portage Glacier
I suggest hitting the trails early, around 8 AM, to avoid the crowds and snag some epic views of the glacier without tons of tourists around. Trust me, it makes a big difference.
Be prepared for changing weather! I wore too light a jacket and regretted it. Layering is key, especially in the afternoon when the winds can pick up.
I think getting the Portage Lake Cruise is totally worth it... The views of the glacier up close are jaw-dropping, but book ahead to save yourself some hassle!
Matanuska Glacier
I recommend getting there by 9 AM to beat the crowds. It was beautiful and quiet in the morning, plus the lighting for photos is way better!
I think it's worth packing a lunch. The snack bar there is decent but overpriced, and sitting on the glacier with a sandwich is cool for sure!
If you're planning to rent gear for ice climbing do it ahead of time online. I found it cheaper and more convenient than renting onsite where they seemed a bit short on sizes!
Worthington Glacier
Bring your own snacks and water! The food options nearby are pretty limited and can be pricey. I saved a bunch by packing a picnic that I enjoyed while taking in the views.
Check the weather before you go. It can change quickly up there, and having a waterproof jacket can save you a wet day. I learned that the hard way.
Don’t forget your camera, but also make sure to have a good pair of binoculars! The wildlife around the glacier can be amazing, and I regretted not having a better view of the distant mountains.
